India boasts of its vibrant culture and dance forms like no other nation in the world. Every state and union territory of our country has unique dance forms which are tightly intertwined with the culture of the people living there. Talking specifically about the dance forms in India, they are categorized into two divisions, i.e. Folk dance and Classical dance forms. Let’s discuss them briefly:
- Classical Dance Forms: The Indian classical dance, also known as the ‘Shastriya Devesh’ is an holistic term used for the several performance arts deeply rooted in the religious Hindu musical theatre styles. The theory and practice of classical dance forms can be traced to the Sanskrit text Natya Shastra. Some examples of classical dance forms are Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, etc.
- Folk Dance Forms: Folk dances of different Indian states and UTs represent the diverse culture and tradition of the community from where it originated. These dance forms are generally performed during the respective community’s celebration – harvest, childbirth, festivals, weddings, etc.
