India is a land of numerous colorful festivals. We celebrate each and every festival with enormous zeal and enthusiasm. Our unity in diversity can be easily seen when people from diverse religious and economic backgrounds get together and celebrate festivals together.
The festivals of India can be categorized into 3 major types:
- National Festivals: These are the festivals which we celebrate to cherish the feeling of patriotism within us and remember the sacrifices given by our ancestors to preserve the greatness of our nation. The 3 important National festivals are: Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti, etc.
- Religious Festivals: These are the festivals which are celebrated to revere and pay respect to the Gods of a particular religion. The major religious festivals of India are: Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, Buddha Purnima, Mahavir Jayanti, etc.
- Seasonal and Harvesting festivals: As the name suggests these are the festivals which mark the change of season or the harvesting of crops. Some important Seasonal and Harvesting festivals are: Basant Panchami, Pongal, Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Onam, Baisakhi, etc.
Now, since there are only 3 National festivals, examiners don’t focus on them. But when it comes to Religious and especially the Seasonal and Harvesting festivals, they form an indispensable part of you Static GK papers.
